The Collage Paintings are works that stitch together images of the city of Berlin. All photographs are taken by the artist during frequent walks throughout the city. The images of surfaces are meant to both evoke a painterly quality in the pictures and in some cases act as triggers for specific places.
The patterns of the collages are inspired by African American quilts, specifically those of the women of Gee’s Bend. The irregular geometries and syncopated patterns are a culturally specific reference to an abstract tradition that was developed in the American South, parallel to that of American Art in New York City.
