Shortly After 9 a.m., 2008
Digital video on DVD, 3 min, color, silent
Shortly After 9 a.m. is an abstraction of United Airlines Flight 175 crashing into the south tower of the World Trade Center in New York on September the 11th, 2001. The abstraction of this image is meant to neutralize its emotive power and suggest an alternative narrative.
Shaortly After 9 a.m. is part of the Strip Video series. The Strip Videos are inspired by the films of Stan Brakhage, a filmmaker who started creating abstract films in the 1960's working into the 1990's by manipulating the celluloid directly, often with paint. Enamored with Brakhage's films and process I asked myself what would be the digital equivelent, being that my tools are digital. I arrived at taking a single photograph and stretching it into a strip and panning that strip from top to bottom. This distortion and cropped viewing produces the abstract imagery in the videos.
